CLARIFICATION – EBO FUNDING

A recent Dictator Watch update  http://www.dictatorwatch.org/prKNUupdate.html on 28 October 2016, on the Karen National Union, alleges that to induce the KNU to sign a ceasefire, Chairman Mutu Say Poe “received over $2 million dollars from the European Union, channeled through Harn Yawnghwe’s Euro-Burma Office, and likely other payments as well.” This is definitely not true.

The Euro-Burma Office has not received any funds from the European Union since 2012. We did not pay $2 million to Chairman Mutu Say Poe or to any ethnic leader.

It is insulting to insinuate that ethnic leaders can be bought. Why are such claims being made? What is the writer hoping to achieve? That is the question.

Our role in the Myanmar peace process is to facilitate a political dialogue between all stakeholders to try to seek a just and equitable solution to the seven-decades old civil war. We were invited to do so by the ethnic armed organizations and the Government of U Thein Sein.

Anyone interested in our work and what projects we support is invited to visit  www.euro-burma.eu. We are audited annually and our Annual Reports are available to all.

Harn Yawnghwe, Executive Director, Euro-Burma Office.
